This group will meet one Sunday per month. Participants will discuss a philosophical issue/problem of their own selection at each meeting. No prior experience with philosophy is required. We will be a mix of people, most with no background in philosophy, some who have had some exposure to philosophy (such as those who majored in philosophy in college), and a few philosophy scholars (philosophy grad students and professors).
Meet other local readers of Philosophy Now (a magazine for all those who have an interest in philosophy), or in general people intrigued by philosophy and its impact on our understanding of life, the universe and everything! The format is a dinner at a restaurant in the city, with a limited number of people to enjoy conversation and intellectual give and take. The idea is that good conversation requires small crowds, and is helped by good food and wine, just like in the original Symposium by Pla …

The Philosophy Forum is a discussion group for members of the LGBT community and SOFFAs (significant others, family, friends & allies). Over the course of more than a decade, we have discussed works from the canon of Western philosophy, texts of Asian philosophy, post-structuralist and contemporary philosophy, and non-philosophic texts — including literary texts — from the perspective of philosophy. We meet in Manhattan every second and fourth Saturday of the month from 4-6 p.m.
It is not easy for the western mind—accustomed to its Spinoza, Schopenhauer, Sartre, Hegel, Nietzsche, and so on— to determine whether yoga is, or is not a philosophy. Yoga is philosophy, because there is no doubt that, with a deep love and great reverence for the Truth, the ancient seers developed one of the most extraordinary philosophies that mankind has ever known, But, at the same time, yoga is not a philosophy, in the sense that there are no topics for debate or discussion and no engagemen …

We’re a discussion group with a focus on rationality, philosophy, science, technology, skepticism and ethics. We choose members who are friendly, intellectually curious, intelligent, non-religious, and rationally-minded – meaning that we’re more interested in figuring out the truth together than in proving ourselves right, or in arguing for the sake of arguing. Our members are young, almost all in the range of 20 to 35 years old. Our meetings are usually informal group discussions at someone’s a …
"To philosophize, we may now say, is an extraordinary questioning into the extraordinary." -- Martin Heidegger, 1935 * * * "The critique of scientism within phenomenology does not seek to refute or negate the results of scientific research in the name of some mystical apprehension of the unity of man and nature, or whatever. Rather, it simply insists that science does not provide the primary or most significant access to a sense of ourselves and the world. Anti-scientism does not at all entail a …
… The goal is to gain a deeper knowledge of and deeply critical perspective on the texts that have shaped human social life over the last few centuries. While most people fight vociferously over ideas derived from these works, few people actually bother reading them. Any member may choose a book she would like to read with a group of other people. This member is not a 'leader' or an 'expert' on the text, but merely facilitates the regular meeting of the group, making sure it has a place to meet …
"The great directors of the cinema may be compared, in our view, not merely to painters, architects and musicians, but also with thinkers. They think with movement-images and time-images instead of concepts. ... One cannot object by pointing to the vast proportion of rubbish in cinematographic production -- it is no worse than anywhere else ... The history of the cinema is a long martyrology. Nevertheless, the cinema still forms part art and part thought, in the irreplaceable, autonomous forms w …
